This module discusses the contribution of internal (linguistic and cognitive), as well as external (individual and societal) factors to the speech of bi- and multilingual individuals. The course aims to explore important aspects of language contact, such as language maintenance, shift, and loss, the linguistic constraints of language contact outcomes, the permeability of the different linguistic components, and characteristics of bilingual speech (convergence, simplification, code-switching, borrowing, among others). In particular, this module guides students in empirical research, specifically in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, as well as its engagement with the topics and the literature discussed in the lectures.
