This module surveys the main theories surrounding how second language acquisition, connecting it to best practices in second language teaching. The origins of second language acquisition theories can be traced back to cognate fields such as linguistics (formal approaches), sociolinguistics (emergentist and sociocultural approaches), psychology (input processing), and education (teaching methods). Thus, this course will investigate the connections between these cognate fields and the different approaches to second language acquisition and teaching to exemplify the diversity of points of view and, as a result, multiplicity of answers to the inquiry of second language acquisition. Given the empirical nature of research in the field, the module will engage students in data collection, analysis, and interpretation in a workshop manner, to better consolidate the understanding of the concepts and the scholarship in the field.
