The prospective disappearance of up to half of the world’s languages by 2021 has become a major concern for linguists and speakers alike. This module introduces students to the intertwined phenomena of language endangerment and revitalisation. In the first half of the module, students examine research into endangerment and related topics including Language Contact and Change, Language Shift, and Language Documentation. In the second half of the module, students investigate responses to language endangerment, including Language Revitalisation, Language Planning and Policy, and Standardisation.
