Area Studies I: Russia. This module explores the diversity of Russia, from “the capitals” of Moscow and St. Petersburg, to the central Volga region and the southern Caucasus region, to the far-flung regions of Siberia and the Russian Far East. We will examine both outside representations of Russia as well as Russian self-representations in a variety of genres, popular and as well as academic. Although an abundance of English-language ethnographic studies have been carried out since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, we will also consider the very long tradition of Soviet ethnography and the tensions between the approaches of Russian and ‘Western’ ethnographers. Students will have the opportunity to learn the Cyrillic alphabet and acquire some rudimentary Russian, although this will not be included in their assessment.
