This course slices into a vast literature by focusing on the intertwined histories of the United States and of American cultural anthropology. Using the intellectual history of the discipline as the organising principle, the major part of our readings will focus on matters of race and of war, both crucial concerns for several generations of scholars interested in cultural processes in the United States. Finally, we will also read material related to class, religion and the impact of values derived from these systems on notions of American identity and nationalism, incorporating some material from recent and ongoing fieldwork in the USA.
