Semester: 2
Department: ANTHROPOLOGY

Overview Overview

The Anthropology of Secularism
Secularism is almost universally held as a positive concept despite wildly varying applications, such as countering freedom of expression (France), repression of democracy (Turkey and the Middle East), and promotion of supposedly secular religions at the expense of others (India). Theorists such as Talal Asad have deconstructed the meanings of secularism and questioned their role in understandings of modernity and power relations. Rather than asking what secularism really means, or which approach is the most authentic, this seminar asks how it came to have this double value: crucial to modern liberalism while being utterly protean in application. We will look at secularism’s theoretical shifts, as well as the varying practices of secularism around the world.
