Title for AN305: Clutter, Chaos and Cosmology
Clutter and its tyrannical hold over our lives is oft-cited as one of the most pressing and problematic aspects of modern consumption. Pathologized and decreed as a modern excess- an “affluenza”, if you will, clutter is subject to cultural valuations around normative discourses of value, order and morality. That which cannot be contained is deemed to be not only unruly and ‘dis-ordered’, but is afforded significant agency with a creeping, insidious sense of threat to our homes, health and happiness. This module will confront and unpack these assumptions through an anthropological lens by paying attention to practices of intentional consumption, recycling and discard. Themes explored will include second-hand consumption practices, design aesthetics, domesticity and alternative forms of exchange.
