This Course explores famine as a process that has existed throughout human history and as a concept in popular, political and academic discourse. Issues debated will include: theories of famine; famine Early Warning Systems; the politics of food production; cultural and structural impact of famine aid and other methods of intervention; media images of famine. The great Irish famine will be considered alongside contemporary examples from Africa and Asia.
