This module introduces some of anthropology's most important ideas, exploring several of the analytical approaches characteristic of ethnographic inquiry today. Students learn to describe and interpret contemporary social phenomena through concepts that are unique to the anthropological tradition.

Taking a broadly semiotic approach, this module introduces major concepts in the anthropology of religion, ritual, and performance, demonstrating a range of comparative theoretical and ethnographic approaches through which anthropologists study these aspects of human social life.
