This module focuses on examples of how fundamental laboratory-based research has led to improvementsin the diagnosis of, or therapy for, diseases. Students will also gain understanding of technologies used for bioproduct generation and the in vitro diagnostics and blood product industry. The module examines the development of novel diagnostics and therapies and show how these have been brought through clinical trials, obtained regulatory clearance and introduced into routine clinical practice. Case studies focus on the development of an innovative Parvovirus diagnostic assay or high sensitivity detection systems, the development of a means of moderating drug resistance in human cancers and the discovery and development of a novel clinically valuable antifungal agent. The course also focuses on the different types of molecular targets that can be exploited in drug development with specific emphasis on how basic research in the area of receptor signalling pathways has contributed to the discovery of new anti-inflammatory drugs. This module examines the link between fundamental research and clinical practice and demonstrates how the two activities are mutually beneficial in terms of patient care and therapy.
