Introduction to coordination chemistry, solid state chemistry and the chemistry of the s-Block metals.
This module covers the following important areas in chemistry:
(i) Coordination Chemistry: Introduction to transition elements. Historical development of co-ordination chemistry and definitions. Co-ordination numbers and structure drawing. Naming complexes and isomerism. Bonding in metal complexes. Formation and stability of complexes. Ligand substitution, electron transfer reactions. Metal ions and chelating agents in medicine.
(ii) Types and structures of crystalline solids. Unit cells in crystalline solids. Close packing systems, cubic close packing (ccp) and hexagonal close-packing (hcp). Principles of X-Ray diffraction. Solid state energetic - Born-Haber cycles and lattice energies. Hydrogen, electronegativity, hydrogen compounds across the periodic table, bond energies in the hydrides, hydrogen bonding. Chemistry of the Group 1 and Group 2 metals, factors influencing the solubility of Group 1 and 2 salts in polar solvents, Fajan's rules, similarity in chemistry between Li+ and Mg2+ and Be2+ and Al3+ (diagonal relationship).
