Introduction to coordination chemistry and the chemistry of the s-block metals.
This module will cover the following important areas in chemistry: (i) Coordination Chemistry: (a) Introduction to transition metals. (b) Historical development of co-ordination chemistry and definitions. (c) Co-ordination numbers and structures of complexes. (d) Nomenclature and isomerism. (e) Bonding in transition metal complexes. (f) Complex formation. (g) Thermodynamic and kinetic stability. (h) Electron transfer reactions.
(ii) S-block chemistry: (a) Hydrogen: isotopes, occurrence, synthesis, physical properties. H+ and H-, Hydrides, bond energies in the hydrides, hydrogen bonding, hydrogen compounds across the periodic table. (b) Chemistry of the Group 1 and Group 2. Occurrence, uses, physical properties. Halides, oxides, oxoacids and salts. Carbonate and hydrogen carbonates. Coordination chemistry of group 1 and 2. Fajan's rules, solubility in water and conductivity. Similarity in chemistry between Li+ and Mg2+ and (diagonal relationship). (c) Solid state energetic of group 1 and 3 salts: Born-Haber cycles and lattice energies.
