This module examines a range of philosophical ideas and theorisations in contemporary picturebooks. Over the course of the elective, a range of picturebooks will be examined through various philosophical lenses to explore philosophical dilemmas and the potential of children’s literature as a socio-cultural, reflective and pedagogical platform for philosophical thinking and discussion. The module will focus on narrative techniques, the didactic and ideological elements of stories for young people, power relations between children and adults, and the philosophical fields of ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of language, social and political philosophy, and aesthetics.
