• 1. Discuss the nature of physical knowledge, measurement of physical quantities and the use of units in describing the laws of nature
• 2. Describe the physics of motion and forces (kinematics & dynamics) using an algebraic approach and vectorial description of motion.
• 3. Discuss the basic properties of matter and thermal physics.
• 4. Solve simple numerical problems relevant to fundamental mechanics and thermodynamics.
• 5. Carry out relevant laboratory experiments to demonstrate and test physical principles and report the results.

• The pass standard is 40%. Students are not required to pass the written and continuous components separately.
• Penalties: Labs and Class Tests cannot be repeated., in general. Late submission of assignments will be subject to a penalty of 10% of the assessment grade for each day (or part thereof) overdue.

• The continuous assessment mark is carried forward to the Autumn examinations, as there is no facility for a repeat practical examination.

* Cutnell & Johnson, Physics, 4th Edition or later, Wiley 1998 – this is an algebra based textbook.

* Dan O’Regan, Real World Physics, Folens – this is a Leaving Cert book; it would suit those who are new to physics.

* Dan O’Regan , Physics – Leaving Certificate Revision, Folens 1995 – out of print but available second hand – lovely lay-out and ideal for revision.

* Laboratory Manuals and a laboratory notebook are provided at a cost of around €20.

Reference Text:

* Serway, Physics for Scientists & Engineers, Saunders College Publishing – this is a calculus based textbook and is recommended for students who have strong mathematics – Serway is a book that you could hold for life for reference – any edition will suffice.
