	Overview
	This module will introduce students to methods of reading, analysing, and contextualising poetry at university level. The module will introduce students to formal and thematic elements that need to be considered when approaching the poetic text (rhythm, form, poetic terminology, national/canonical traditions). Students will also examine the issues of periodisation, canon formation, and different poetic traditions.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Show the ability to analyze poetry using the techniques, vocabularies and approaches of contemporary literary studies, including a grasp of technical vocabulary in the analysis of metre, rhythm and verse form Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the historical context of literary production Categorize texts in the light of different eras and literary styles Identify some of the key factors behind the construction and celebration of particular texts, of authors and, consequently of literary canons Write responses to exam questions, making convincing arguments based on reading primary and secondary texts Identify and use relevant subject-specific electronic resources and other library resources
