The aim of this module is to introduce students to a range of topics in modern astronomy, as well as astronomical telescopes, instrumentation & techniques.

Astronomy: Celestial coordinates & time, the ISM, star formation, stellar nucleosynthesis, binary systems, exoplanets, gamma-ray bursts, the cosmological distance ladder, large-scale structure, introduction to special relativity.

Astronomical instrumentation: Telescopes, resolution, aberrations, atmospheric seeing, Schmidt telescope, active optics, adaptive optics, optical detectors; Radio telescopes, interferometry; X-ray telescopes, other wavebands.
