Module APPLIED ELECTROMAGNETICS

Module code: EP301
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Créidhe O'Sullivan (EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS)
Overview Overview

The aim of this module is to further develop the basic concepts of electromagnetism using vector calculus and study applications in AC circuits and transmission lines.

Module content:
AC theory and complex impedance, resonance, transmission lines, line termination, impedance matching. Electrostatic Fields, Coulomb's Law, Gauss's Law, Divergence, 1st Maxwell equation, electrostatic potential, gradient, energy in electrostatic fields. Polarization, dielectrics, induced charge, displacement field. Magnetic fields, current density, Ampere's Law, Curl, Stokes' Theorem, 3rd Maxwell equation, vector potential, magnetic materials, displacement currents, 4th Maxwell equation, electromagnetic waves.

This module specifically addresses the following topics of the Core of Physics, as defined by Institute of Physics:

- Trigonometric and hyperbolic functions; complex numbers

- Vectors to the level of div, grad and curl; divergence theorem and Stokes’ theorem

- Electrostatics and magnetostatics

- DC and AC circuit analysis to complex impedance, transients and resonance

- Gauss, Faraday, Ampère, Lenz and Lorentz laws to the level of their vector expression

- Maxwell’s equations and plane EM wave solution; Poynting vector
