	Overview
	This module addresses the role and importance of the breeding sector to the Irish equine industry. This module will give students a comprehensive insight into the practical activities, administrative, and management functions required to run a breeding establishment (SH or Tb) successfully and profitably. Students will be introduced to the various types of establishments and services offered within the equine breeding sector and the business models that are utilised within the sector. Areas discussed and critically evaluated in terms of their importance to the profitable management of a breeding establishment include the effective design of farms, yards and facilities to ensure efficient time and labour management. Health and safety on the stud, routine veterinary care, assisted reproductive techniques, bio security, nutrition and grassland management, market selection and breeding for purpose, selection of mares and stallion for stud, pedigree analysis, sale preparation, sale selection, and analysis. Students will gain knowledge and experience with the most recent computer management software applicable to the sector. Students will review and discuss the importance of advertising and marketing the stud enterprise and the various different fora available to do so effectively. The discussion of stud farm management is done in the context of current management theory and best practice. Students will learn about and have the opportunity to discuss current and/or topical issues of concern within the breeding sector with a number of expert industry practitioners who will join the class for a speaker series that runs throughout the module.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Assess the contribution of stud farm design and maintenance and grassland management to farm profitability; Examine critically the concept of responsible breeding, breeding for purpose, and selection criteria for retiring mares and stallions to stud to ensure farm profitability; Demonstrate the importance of cost control/financial management to the profitability of a breeding establishment; Demonstrate the importance of record keeping and its role within stud farm administration systems; Review and critically appraise management computer software used on stud farms; Appraise how stud farms comply with relevant legislation; Appraise the various sales on offer, their entry criteria, and their performance over the years; Defend their choice of sale selection; Be competent in describing, discussing, and applying a selection of advertising and marketing strategies to a breeding enterprise; Critically evaluate stud management policies in relation to disease prevention and control; and Review and evaluate critically national/international policies in relation to exotic disease management and control.
