• Demonstrate awareness of the emergence of the woman writer in the context of the French salons, and of the influence of women in literary developments.
• Analyse the representation and treatment of women in the texts chosen for study.
• Situate the texts studied within their literary and cultural contexts.
• Identify and discuss the developments in tragic drama and prose in seventeenth-century France.

• 12 lecture hours, supplemented by private study.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Essay or one-hour examination at the end of semester.
