Overview Overview

Un secret, a short autobiographical novel by Philippe Grimbert published in 2004, tells the story of one family haunted by a secret from the past. In telling the story of his family, and his own identity quest in response to his family’s secret, the narrator revisits the way the Nazi Occupation of France during World War II continues to haunt the lives and the memories of the French. The story was adapted for the cinema by Claude Miller in 2007. In lectures and in-class practical work we explore questions relating to narrative, autobiographical fiction, cinematography, adapting literature into film, and French society.
