• Produce grammatically accurate and syntactically coherent sentences in written and spoken French
• Construct a coherent written argument in French using a plan to explain the pros and cons of a given topic
• Communicate in spoken French with a high level of accuracy and spontaneity, with an awareness of register and idiom
• Express in spoken French a range of opinions on a topic relating to contemporary French society or to the French speaking world.

• 24 written language hours, 12 oral language hours

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Weekly exercises in essay writing and research, practice of conversation and presentation skills; and continuous assessment in class.
• Other detail(s): Oral examination. The oral language assessment is a required element of this module. See pass standard below.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? If the marks and standards are not met, or if the attendance requirement is not met.
• A minimum mark of 40% on each of the oral and written components of the examination must be achieved in order to obtain a pass in the module. Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate). A minimum mark of 40% must be obtained to pass the oral examination. A minimum mark of 40% must be obtained on the written paper as a whole.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• 2 hour written examination and an oral examination. If a student has passed the written or oral examination in the January sitting, they are not required to resit that examination in the Autumn examination session, but all failed examinations must be retaken in the Autumn exam period. Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn period and contribute to the calculation of the grade for that exam session.
