On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-
explain the ways in which films make meaning, through textual analysis of techniques such as editing, mise en scène, etc., and use the découpage format as a means of analyzing film form;
-
understand how cultural texts such as films emerge through a combination of social, political and economic processes;
-
recognize the relation between film narratives and wider social and ideological ‘stories’;
-
appreciate the close relation between text and context through knowledge of Quebec history, society and politics;
-
discuss comfortably some key examples of Québécois cinema, including its most important modern directors, and give an informed account of its chief concerns, including the family, religion, working-class identity, and the ‘sense of place’, as well as its main formal aspects such as the comedy genre.
