Module PRESSE ET LITTÉRATURE AU DIX-NEUVIÈME SIÈCLE

Module code: FR338
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Quota: 20
Department: FRENCH
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Sarah Gubbins (FRENCH)
Overview Overview

This module will explore nineteenth century French novels, prose poetry and theoretical and political texts through the window of the print media. In many cases, students will encounter the texts under consideration in their original publication settings, thanks to the digital reproductions available through the BnF Gallica website. We will analyse the social and historical contexts in which the texts were published, as well as their form, in order to explore the complex interactions between literature, journalism, and society from the July Monarchy to the fin-de-siècle period. Due to the length of some of the texts concerned, seminars will focus on the close analysis of the representative extracts.
