Module code: GC213
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: ANCIENT CLASSICS
International: Yes
Overview Overview

The Iliad is the oldest surviving work of Greek and European literature, and its importance for later Greek culture of all periods is such that Homer was known as ‘the poet’ and the Iliad has been called the ‘Bible of the Greeks’. In exploring this many-sided legacy, this module will first look in some detail at the Iliad, its historical context, narrative techniques and the heroic culture it depicts. The second half of the module will turn to ways in which the Iliad remained the touchstone for Greek thinking on such topics as love, conflict, religion, ethics and politics from Sappho to Plato to Alexander to Great.
