Module GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY

Module code: GC229
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: ANCIENT CLASSICS
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr William Desmond (ANCIENT CLASSICS)
Overview Overview

From Aphrodite to Zeus, the world of Greek mythology has been a continual source of fascination—to the Greeks themselves, to their Roman conquerors, and down to the present day. This module will survey ancient mythology, particularly through the lens of ancient epic and visual art, both Greek and Roman. Beginning with Greek myths of creation, we will examine in turn the nature of the Greek gods and goddesses (and their Roman equivalents), the heroic quest, the hero as warrior and wanderer, the lure of immortality, and assorted tales of love and betrayal. The last third of the module turns the focus more to Roman adaptations of and additions to Greek myth, most specifically in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, before ending with a glance at receptions of ancient myth in modern literature and film.
