Module LOVE AND THE CITY: ROMAN ELEGY FROM CATULLUS TO OVID

Module code: GC317
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: ANCIENT CLASSICS
International: Yes
Overview Overview

The genre of love elegy appeared, flourished and vanished in the short span of fifty years, reaching an immense popularity that still resonates today. In this module, we will read in English translation a selection of the poems of the big four love elegists: Catullus, Tibullus, Propertius, and Ovid. We will trace the development of the genre, make ourselves familiar with the themes and conventions of love elegy, and discuss the impact that the Augustan marriage reforms had on the emergence of this intimate and often lascivious genre. Close readings will help the students discover the sophistication of the poems and the intricate structure of the collections.
