Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: GERMAN
International: Yes
Coordinator: Antoinette McNamara (GERMAN)
Overview Overview

This module is aimed at students who are interested in learning German alongside the core subjects of their degree programmes. It will appeal to all types of students – those who have a genuine interest in learning about the German language and culture for their own sake as well as those who are motivated to develop German language skills and (inter)cultural competence to enhance their employment prospects in Ireland and further afield. German as an elective subject is open to Second Year undergraduate students from all three faculties as well as postgraduate students of any level. The module aims at developing confidence and accuracy in German through various media (texts, images, videos, online resources) and to enable students to use the German language in a range of contexts and situations.

This module is aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at level A1.1, where the emphasis is on achieving a fundamental level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). A student achieving an overall mark of 60% or higher in this module will have demonstrated linguistic competence commensurate with CEFR level A1.1.

Please note: This module is not suitable for students who took German at Leaving Certificate level or students who have previously taken classes in German.
