Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Quota: 24
Department: GERMAN
International: Yes
Coordinator: Prof. Valerie Heffernan (SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES)
Overview Overview

Contemporary women’s writing in German
This module will focus on contemporary novels by women writers. We will consider how these writers engage with the social, cultural and political changes that have taken place since the unification of Germany in 1990. We will also look at how they tackle themes that often emerge in women’s writing, such as gender and sexuality, social and familial roles, relationships between women and between the sexes, and the female body. Intended participants should note that substantial parts of this module will be delivered in German and participation through the medium of German is expected.

Course texts:
Zoë Jenny, Das Blütenstaubzimmer (1997)
Julia Franck, Lagerfeuer (2003)
Alina Bronsky, Scherbenpark (2008)
Jenny Erpenbeck, Aller Tage Abend (2012)

**This 5-ECTS credit module may be used as part of the 15-ECTS credits in the study of literature (including drama, poetry, fiction, film studies etc.) required for accreditation by the Teaching Council of Ireland.
