This module aims to provide students with an appreciation of the key geographical processes which mark modern western societies. Following an introduction to the historical emergence of these societies, this module will examine empire, colonial and post colonial impacts, population processes, cities and cityscapes, economic landscapes, migration and diaspora, social and cultural patterns, geopolitical trends and environmental pressures. Case studies from the traditional OECD countries (Europe, Japan, North America, Australia) and from emerging western national, cities, and regions (Eastern Europe, China) will be drawn upon.
