This module invites students to explore the waves of social, economic and cultural change which transformed Europe in the late medieval period (c. 1000 – c. 1450), with a particular focus on understanding the Irish experience of these broad trends. How was authority, both religious and secular, shaped and legitimated in the medieval world? What impact did these ideologies have on family relationships, on knowledge systems, on health and wellbeing? And what strategies were available to artisans, peasants, slaves or rebels to resist or circumvent those authorities? This module will explore these questions through a deep engagement with primary sources from Ireland and across Europe, including some drawn from Maynooth’s own collections of medieval manuscripts.
