The module will compare and contrast town foundation and development in Ireland with that of other countries. Patterns of continuity and change will be dealt with in terms of both the physical and political aspects of town building. In addition to documentary sources, evidence derived from topography, demography, cartography, and especially archaeology will be looked at in some detail. Key features of towns from each phase will be identified and discussed.
