Module WAR AND SOCIETY

Module code: HY631
Credits: 12.5
Semester: 1
Department: HISTORY
International: No
Overview Overview

This course takes the “War and Society” approach to studying the social, political and cultural aspects of war in Ireland with an emphasis on the Great War.

The course explores the causes, course, and consequences of civilian mobilisation in Ireland during the First World War. The primary goal of the course is to uncover the wide range of events and activities that are often ignored and reflects on Irish ‘national amnesia’ in response to the war. It examines how civil society mobilised in response to the horrors of war. Four broad themes are closely examined: the home rule crisis and the rise of paramilitaries; civilian responses to war wounded; the sideshow story of captivity and internment in Ireland; memory and remembrance.
The course will be taught using active methodologies and students will be expected to take an active part in lectures, seminars and independent learning.
