Module THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF EARLY IRISH SOCIETY

Module code: ID014
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: CELTIC STUDIES
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This is a foundation course in Irish Cultural Heritage Studies introducing students to a general understanding of early Irish society. Late prehistoric social organisation was controlled by a warrior aristocracy who ruled dispersed agricultural communities but with some evidence of emerging provincial political structures. Early medieval society was based around the family (fine, a complex multigenerational social and legal unit) and the tribe (about 150 examples) cradled in a number of important social systems including kinship, clientship, fosterage and formal concepts of honour. Students will be introduced to this period through multidisciplinary perspective including archaeology, history and literature that will include the role and status of women. Sources will include both historical documents (such as the Annals, Law Tracts, Genealogies, Hagiographies and a wealth of early literature) and archaeological data derived from modern excavation of many residential and funerary sites.

Note: Students taking the Certificate in Irish Cultural Heritage in Semester 1, must take ID001 or ID014 as the core module. This can also be included as an optional module for the Certificate in Irish Cultural Heritage.
