Module IRELAND’S ISLAND HERITAGE

Module code: ID203
Credits: 10
Semester: S
Department: NUA-GHAEILGE
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Using the concept of an island as a unifying theme, this programme explores the cultural heritage of Ireland as an island nation along with its many other islands, including those at inland locations, e.g. Holy Island, and some offshore examples such as the Aran Islands and the Blasket Islands off the west coast. This concept will be further developed through a discussion of related themes such as rivers, landscapes and settlements, providing the context for an integrated practical assessment of the archaeology, history, architecture and literature of early Ireland. Much of this programme will be delivered at field based locations, firstly in close proximity to Maynooth, secondly around the inland waterways of the Shannon region, and finally in counties Clare and Kerry on the west coast.
