On completion of the module, students should be able to: understand the concept of ethics and development ethics in particular, They will understand the process of moral reasoning and various theories of distributive justice.

Students should be able to reflect on the moral reasoning behind the decisions and actions people take, and consider whether people in the Global North have an ethical duty to redistribute wealth with those in the Global South.

Students should be able to discuss some of the successes and failures of ‘development’ and argue for ways in which more ethical forms of development could be conducted.

Students should be able to formulate arguments on current ethical issues within the development arena, issues that are pertinent to students, for example, the ethics of volunteering abroad and volunteer tourism.

Students should be able to apply their learning to their own lives, to see if ethical principles can guide their own conduct – both personal and professional – especially if working in future in the field of development.

Overall, students should have critically reflective and well-balanced attitudes, and well-informed perspectives on the ethics of development.
