Module THE ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT: THEORIES AND PRACTICES (CORE)

Module code: KD301
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Concern about the environment has become a central feature of the rhetoric and thinking of Development Studies.
There is widespread recognition that social and economic change can affect the environment.
The flip side of this is that a degraded environment makes the poor more vulnerable and impedes 'development'.
Calls for ‘sustainable development’ and ‘environmental protection’ have been around for some time yet it is only in the last decade,
that environmental concerns have began to be ‘mainstreamed’ into national and international policy making.
The challenge of climate change has become an imperative for Development practitioners and policy makers.
Meanwhile at the local level there are numerous conflicts of interest over access to, and control of, natural resources.
No analysis of environmental change can take place without making explicit the social, economic and political dimensions.
This module aims to provide participants with an overview of global environmental change and to facilitate their understanding and analysis of
the inter-relationship between environment and development issues.
