	Overview
	The aim of this module is to present a rationale for the concept and broad approach of Global Citizenship Education (GCE), its relationship to Development practice, and encourage critical reflection on its place within broader global development strategies. Its relationship to other educational approaches such as 'Global Learning', 'Development Education', and 'Education for Sustainable Development' will be examined and reflected upon. As the general approach to GCE can be understood as a participatory process of learning, the module will encourage students to explore and critique this, and enable their practical appreciation of this through group-centered exercises and activities, with specific focus on the role of facilitation as an alternative to more didactic teaching methods.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Have an understanding of the concept of Development Education as it is interpreted by educators, development practitioners, NGOs and statutory bodies in Ireland and internationally. Have developed a critical appreciation for Development Education as a global development strategy and where it is situated in relation to other approaches with similar objectives, such as Global Learning, and Global Citizenship Education. Have a clear awareness of the practicalities and overall role of facilitation as an approach to delivering Development Education. Have acquired confidence and competence to design a Development Education workshop on a specific theme for a particular group of participants. Have developed basic group facilitation skills and will have experienced using these as part of the module.

	Please Note: The course is primarily intended for students that have accumulated credits in first and second year courses in International Development. However, International or Occasional students who have a clear interest in taking the module are welcome to apply. 24 lecture hours and additional tutorial hours The approach employs experiential learning, is participatory and applied, and all sessions involve the introduction of concepts, ideas, information, combined with individual and group exercises. Penalties: Resit students must submit their continuous assessment by a date before the Autumn examination, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. This will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.
