This module begins by introducing students to some of the main models and theoretical frameworks used to understand the operation of the criminal justice system before proceeding to map out the criminal process and the role of the various actors and institutions within it. These actors and agencies are then examined in further detail by utilising the results of criminological research to illuminate aspects of criminal justice in action and to compare accounts with official objectives. The module concludes by introducing a number of contemporary issues and debates relating to the operation of the criminal justice system and the punishment of offenders.
