This module, which will ordinarily be run as a Summer School, will explore the development of the protection of human rights in the EU, focusing on relevant CJEU case law, as well as EU legislative and policy measures. The school will also critically examine the role of human rights’ promotion in EU external relations. All in all, the module will interrogate the relationship between the ongoing process of European integration and the development of EU external action to promote international justice. It will provide students with a systematic understanding of the role and action of the EU in the global context.
Topics covered include:

1. The protection and promotion of human rights in the EU
2. The EU institutional architecture for the protection of human rights in the EU
3. The EU accession to the European Convention on Human Rights
4. Instruments of EU external action for the promotion of human rights
5. Human Rights in the Common Commercial Policy
6. Human Rights in neighbourhood policy
7. EU cultural policy and human rights
8. Human Rights in the Common Foreign and Security Policy

Any aspect of this summer school may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.

Language Requirements

• Proficiency in English for International students
Students must meet one of the following requirements:

IELTS: 6.5 minimum overall score
TOEFL (Paper based test): 585
TOEFL (Internet based test): 95
PTEA (Pearson): 62
CAE: With grade B or better or 185 points overall
Students who have studied in an English speaking institution, or have courses taught at their university in English (excluding English language courses) may meet the language requirements without having to supply one of the above certificates. Evidence of this will either need to be included on a transcript or letter from their university.

Students who have a certificate demonstrating high-school or third-level qualification in English (such as the international baccalaureate) with at least three years of tuition in English, may meet the language requirements without having to supply one of the above certificates.
