This module introduces students to the key legal issues affecting traditional and new media. The module will begin by considering a number of fundamental themes that underpin the rest of the syllabus. The role of the media in democratic society (including conceptions of the “public interest”) and the rights jurisprudence will be examined.

The module covers topics such as defamation law, privacy law, freedom of expression, freedom of information law, copyright law, and the regulation of journalistic practices.

Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.
