Overview Overview

This module offers students who are taking Criminology as a subject an opportunity to complete a meaningful, focussed piece of research or other academic work in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Policing, Sentencing, Penal Studies or cognate areas in conjunction with or on behalf of a member of academic staff. This may include, for instance, meaningful research support to an academic staff member, completion of a submission for a public consultation or similar exercise, work on behalf of or for submission to an NGO or advocacy group, or meaningful data collection and analysis under the direction of an academic staff member. In all cases, an academic staff member will supervise the work. The work in question should involve meaningful research providing a substantive learning experience.
The purpose of this module is to build relevant research, data gathering and writing skills by completing research on a topic of relevance in the field of Criminology, Criminal Justice, Policing, Sentencing, Penal Studies or cognate areas.
There are three modes of entry to this module:
- Academic proposal: One or more academic staff member(s) with a research proposal may put forward a research proposal for which students will be invited to apply.
- Student proposal: A student with a clearly formulated research proposal may approach a lecturer with an expertise and/or interest in the relevant research field and ask to be supervised by an academic staff member.
- External proposal: In appropriate cases, an external body such as a charity or non-profit may pose a research question, and ask an academic staff member to supervise a student in addressing that question.
In all cases, it is at the discretion of the academic staff member(s) to determine whether or not to supervise the applied research proposal, and whether to supervise a particular applicant’s work. Admission to the module is conditional on the approval and agreement of an academic staff member. The Department also reserves the right to decline to entertain any proposal.
Formal entry and registration on this module is by invitation only (students cannot automatically enrol and will need to be approved by an academic staff member in advance of registration.)
Orientation will include project management, time management, engagement with stakeholders and a refresher on criminological research methods.
Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.
