This module provides students with an overview of classic and contemporary criminological themes, drawing on key debates on the nature of crime, its causes and the state’s response to it. The module content is divided into three main parts comprising: Understanding Crime and Criminology; Understanding Criminological Theory; and Understanding Criminal Justice. Students in the first part of the module critically examine the concept of crime and the discipline of criminology, including discussions on crime as social construct, the measurement of crime and the role of the media. In the second part, students will move to discuss some of the key theories and philosophical approaches which form the basis of contemporary criminology, drawing in particular on the divide between classical and positivistic approaches. The final section will examine different aspects of the criminal justice process, including the idea of punishment, what it involves and how it is to be understood.
Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.
