	This module will provide a detailed examination of the legal protection of intellectual property rights at both a domestic and international level encompassing such matters as copyright, trade-marks, and patents as well as the law governing the registration of such rights and the penalties for their infringement. Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Display an in-depth knowledge of the requirements that must be met for recognition of a patent and a trade mark as well as the process by which they may be registered. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles relating to the establishment of copyright by an author over material, and be able to distinguish between uses that infringe such copyright and those that do not. Examine the policy reasons for the limitation on such rights and to debate the utility and effectiveness of such limitations. Analyse the interaction between intellectual property law and competition law and understand the interaction between domestic and international IP protection. Interpret a given factual matrix in light of IP law principles, summarise the main legal issues involved and construct an opinion as to the legal protection afforded to the IP right in issue.
