This module provides a discussion and analysis of the history and development of international criminal law, international crimes (genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggression) and general principles of international criminal law. It discusses the development of the principle of individual criminal responsibility and the evolution of the international criminal law framework, including tribunal and court statutes since the Nuremberg Tribunal in the aftermath of World War II. It also provides an analysis of how international tribunals and courts operate and discusses important decisions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court. In addition, it provides a critique of the operation of international tribunals, in particular, the International Criminal Court, with regard to issues such as jurisdiction and admissibility, sentencing and defences to international crimes.
