Module code: MN202A
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: BUSINESS
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Marian Crowley-Henry (BUSINESS)
Overview Overview

The module is concerned with theories of organisation, structure and design. It builds on students’ knowledge of organisational behaviour and management fundamentals which were introduced in the first year of the programme.
The aim of the module is to develop students’ ability to critically assess organisations by encouraging them to consider different perspectives or ways in which to study and analyse an organisation’s activities. The module is aimed at developing student’s self reflections regarding how an organisation can be studied and analysed, encouraging students to appreciate different concepts and ways to view the world.
Organisations play an important role in modern society from social, economic, political, legal, and ethical perspectives. They have become a dominant means of creating wealth and employment and for creating and solving many contemporary social, political, and economic problems. Hence, their management is of increasing significance and the ability to analyse and understand them is of increasing importance.
This module explores the fundamentals of various theories of organisation, and how organisational design influences functioning. It brings together theory and practice in encouraging students to view organisations from different perspectives in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of organisational theory and design. Reading organisational life in different ways/from different perspectives is considered a core managerial competence for turbulent times. The module illustrates how managers, human resource professionals, and other organisation members can use different perspectives on organisational theory as tools for informing and guiding action with a focus on leadership and strategic thinking.
