Module NEGOTIATION AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION

Module code: MN317
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: BUSINESS
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Marian Crowley-Henry (BUSINESS)
Overview Overview

In a constantly changing global business environment multiple internal and external stakeholders influence an organisation’s strategy and ultimate success or failure. Managing staff as well as managing relationships with customers and other external stakeholders is a core management role. However, interactions with staff and other stakeholders can sometimes lead to problems and disputes. It is essential, therefore, that Business students grasp the essentials of negotiation as the primary formal method for resolving significant problems. Managers use negotiation in a variety of settings: negotiating their own contracts of employment, negotiating business ventures, negotiating with colleagues, peers and superiors, and in the handling of employment relations.
It is also essential that Business students understand the wide range of other methods that are available for addressing disputes of an inter-personal, commercial and employee relations kind. These included Mediation, Facilitation, Arbitration and a range of approaches badged as Alternative Dispute Resolution or ADR.
This module offers a solid foundation in Negotiation, Mediation, Conciliation, Facilitation, Arbitration, and Alternative Dispute Resolution methods in theory, research and practice. The Module will focus on developing understanding of these approaches as an added interpersonal competence, but with emphasis on the workplace and commercial environments.
The module will assist students to identify their own styles and preferences in the handling of negotiation and different forms of dispute resolution.
