On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

write for four-part mixed choir in the style of Bach, in particular regarding chord-selection and progression, also disposition of the tenor line.

recognise explicit and implicit cadences, and harmonise cadential approaches and progressions effectively with the use of formulas.

interpret melodic notes as essential or unessential elements, and provide dissonances in the lower voices as appropriate.

detect and treat modulation according to the principles applied by Bach.

recognise 18th-century baroque contrapuntal style, as typified by Bach’s Inventions and Sinfonias.

identify motives, countermotives and other motivic devices such as sequence, imitation, augmentation, diminution, reversion and inversion.

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to appraise the harmonic structure of an invention or similar short baroque instrumental work.

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to compose short segments of two-part counterpoint based on a given motive.
