On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-
list the stylistic features of renaissance polyphony and aurally recognise music of the period.
-
identify and distinguish between five species of two-voiced strict counterpoint.
-
identify and manage the balance between linear and vertical ingredients of the music, by striving for undulating and independent individual lines, and by an appropriate combination of tension and release in the handling of dissonances and their resolutions.
-
compose a passage of renaissance counterpoint for three voices in an imitative style.
