This module introduces different manufacturing processes and production methods together with their constraints, variations, qualities and costs.
Syllabus elements are:
Introduction to Manufacturing Processes; Principles of Design for Manufacture and Assembly;
Machining (Drilling, Turning, Boring, Milling, Grinding, Sawing, Broaching, Shaping, Planing); Forming of Metals (Rolling, Forging, Extrusion, Drawing, Sheet-Metalworking Processes - Shearing, Bending, Deep-Drawing); Casting; Powder Metallurgy; Polymer Processing (Moulding, Extrusion, Pultrusion);
Joining (Brazing, Soldering, Mechanical Fastening, Adhesive Bonding, Welding).
