This module presents a number of topics that are of particular interest and relevance to the SME manager. The topics are considered in an applied and practice-oriented approach, with many contributions from external practitioners as topic lecturers.
The module is delivered in distinct sections for each topic. A topic is treated in a 2-hour lecture, with pre- and post-lecture reading and study requirements. Students are required to record their own learning experience for each topic in a learning portfolio, which will be submitted and used as the basis of assessment and interview examination at the end of semester.

Syllabus elements are:
Company formation and new business start-up; Governance and boards; Decision making; Negotiation; Employment issues (Health and safety, Employment contracts, Employee evaluation, Disciplinary procedures, Team building); Credit control and cost control; Insurance; Leases/mortgages; Owner-managers and family businesses; Networks and industry support structures.
